Planning: Pictures
I quickly brainstormed and wrote down what different types of pictures I could use within my Local Newspaper. From my earlier questionnaire I already know that 19/20 people would like colour throughout my Local Newspaper, so I will be using colour throughout my Newspaper. I also want my pictures to be interesting and eye-catching to the readers. From my previous questionnaire I already know that pictures are very important to the readers as 45% of people said they would prefer more pictures to text. Even though I will be having more text to pictures I know that pictures are important to my readers so I will make sure they are interesting and stand out.I will be using a range of different sized pictures from small to large. And I will be making sure my pictures relate to the article and are meaningful.
Planning: Language
I quickly brainstormed and wrote down what different types of language could be used throughout my newspaper. For the tiles and sub-tiles I will be using short and snappy language with some slang and informal language in it, like newspapers generally use. By using this type of language for my titles and sub-titles this will grab my readers attention and get them interested in the story.Within my articles I will be using formal and informal language this will hopefully interest all generations within my articles I will not be using slang unless it is a quote because I want my newspaper to have a professional feel.
Planning: Potential Articles

I quickly brainstormed and came up with a few ideas for each article category. From my previous questionnaire I already know 35% of my newspaper readers would like a crime and punishment story on the front cover. So I will definitely be having a crime and punishment story on the front cover. When asking my peers what other stories they think would work well within my newspaper it was almost even. So I can see that my readers want a bit of everything within my newspaper.

Planning: The colour scheme for my Local Newspaper

By looking at other Local Newspapers and taking into account the area (Crowthorne) which my Local Newspaper will be issued to I came up with eight different colour schemes. I then asked 10 of my peers what colour scheme they felt was appropriate for my Local Newspaper. 40% said they thought the best colour scheme for me to use is green, red and black (with the bland white background) taking into account my previous questionnaire were 95% of people said they would like colour throughout the newspaper, I would have to agree because this colour scheme has three different colours in it. Also taking into account the area, this colour scheme is perfect because it represents the area well. The green represents Crowthorne’s outside and two local schools Edgbarrow and C of E and the red also represents Edgbarrow.

Planning: My Newspaper's Name

Thursday, 15 October 2009
Analysis of Local Newspaper Poster Advertisement:
The newspapers name is obviously just as important because it’s in black lettering. This is big and black so it also captures the readers attention so they know what newspaper to buy.
Analysis of Local Newspaper Poster Advertisement:
This newspaper poster is advertising a story for ‘The Press.’ There have only been three colours used black, red and white and I feel these colours work very well together and capture the reader’s attention. The black block colour is used for the newspapers story, this is clearly the main focus of the poster and it is very affective. The white block colour against the red block border is also very affective it isn’t the first thing you look at, however it does draw you into the poster and brightens up the poster. The red colour borders suggest this newspaper is exciting and interesting.
I really like how this poster has been done and would like to do something similar to this for my local newspaper poster.
Analysis of Local Newspaper Poster Advertisement:
The story is short and to the point. It needs to be interesting so it captures the readers attention and makes them want to read the story, therefore buy the newspaper.
The name of the newspaper has also been advertised very well here this is also an important feature because the newspaper wants the readers to know what newspaper to buy.
I really like the fact that the story and name of the newspaper are the main features, however I would like to include some block colour to grab the buyers attention and to make the poster look more appealing to all generations.
Analysis of a Local Newspaper's second page:

The content is down the left hand side of this page, it includes a picture which adds more interest to it. However unlike ‘Bracknell Forest Standard’ it does take up quite a bit of space.
On this page there is almost only advertisement. I will be including less advertisement then this and actually articles. I feel this will interest the readers more.
I feel this page does include a nice bit of colour from the advertisements which makes the page look more interesting and appealing to the reader.
Analysis of a Local Newspaper's second page:

The content is also at the bottom left hand side of this newspaper it doesn’t take up much space but looks neat and is very helpful to the readers so I will be incorporating this into my Local Newspaper.
On this page I don’t feel there are enough pictures relating to the articles, however the pictures are community based and I would like to have community based pictures throughout my newspaper. In my Local Newspaper I am going to include more pictures then this because 45% of people who filled in my questionnaire said they would like more pictures to text. So even though I will provide the readers with more text then pictures there need’s to be a fair amount of pictures within my Local Newspaper. The pictures also allow the text to be broken up and not look so daunting for the younger generation, and add better understanding to the text. The captions for the pictures were not directly below; in my Local Newspaper I will have my captions directly below so people understand what the picture is about.
There are almost no advertisements on this page. I will be having more advertisements on my second page advertising local businesses. This will be laid out neatly down one side of the newspaper so it gives a clean, professional look.
I really like the way the articles have been written neatly in five straight columns going down the page. I feel this looks neat and professional and is easy to read. I also like the subheadings because they are bigger and bolder then the other text and really break up and divide the articles which make it less daunting to read.
I would also like to add a bit more colour to my Local Newspaper because from my questionnaire I discovered 19/20 people would prefer colour throughout there Local Newspaper.

Analysis of a Local Newspaper's second page:

Like most newspapers some of the articles are displayed on the front page of the newspaper to show the reader what is inside the newspaper. And on the second page of the newspaper there is a content to show you what else is in the newspaper. I will be doing this in my Local Newspaper so the readers know were to find everything quickly and easily.
The main article on the front page generally follows onto another page within the newspaper. I’m going to have mine follow onto the second page.
On this page I don’t feel there are enough pictures relating to the articles. Analysis of a Local Newspaper Front Page:

This local newspaper is called ‘Bracknell Forest Standard’ this is written at the top left of the page with the ‘Standard’ being the main focus of the newspapers name. ‘Bracknell Forest’ is written in white smaller lettering, this is done in a more formally style. Whereas ‘standard’ is written much bigger in block lettering, this style looks appealing to all generations. The name of the local newspaper is in a blue round border which makes it standout.
The colours which have been used on the front page of this local magazine are mainly black, blue and white. All these colours are quite simple but make the newspaper look fresh. The advertisements have been done in bright colours such as yellow, pink and green, which freshen up the page with a young look.
There are a few pictures featured on the front page. The main picture is of a middle aged man. The picture is quite large and is eye catching, ths is what I would like to achieve with my local newspaper.
Because this is a local newspaper there is mainly text which makes the newspaper look serious and appeals mainly to the older generation. I want my local newspaper to also appeal to the younger generation. I will do this by adding more exciting pictures and slightly more colour.
Because this is a local magazine the layout is very busy with a lot going on. However I feel this local newspaper has been structured in a much organised manner, which I like and I would try and have a similar layout on my front page.

There are a few pictures featured on the front page. The main picture is of a young girl playing snooker. The picture looks bright however the border is plain and this makes the picture blend in. On my front page I want the pictures to stand out.

Analysis of a Local Newspaper Front Page:
This local newspaper is called ‘Bracknell and Wokingham Midweek’ this is written at the top left of the page with the ‘Midweek’ being the main focus of the newspapers name. ‘Bracknell and Wokingham’ are written in blue smaller lettering; however it’s still in the same style as ‘Midweek’ which has been written much bigger in black. The colours and style of writing suggest it is a serious magazine. And the colour scheme of the name fits in with the rest of the newspaper which suggests it’s not meant to stand out.The colours which have been used on the front page of this local newspaper are mainly black, blue and red. With the plain white back ground. All these colours are quite simple with the red colour which is advertising a few items standing out the most.
There are a few pictures featured on the front page. The main picture is of a guinea pig. It’s not a very exciting picture but because it’s high lighted in red it makes it look more interesting. I will make my picture more interesting.

Codes and conventions:
Codes can be divided into two categories which are technical and symbolic. Technical codes are all the ways in which equipment is used to tell the story in a media text, for example the font and font size in a newspaper. Symbolic for example is the size of the text in the newspaper, if a word is big and bold this symbolises that it is more important then small, thin text. And this code shows what is beneath the surface that we can see. Some media fits both categories such as music which is both technical and symbolic.
Conventions are the generally accepted ways of doing something. There are general conventions in any medium, such as the use of interview quotes in a print article, but conventions are also genre specific.
Codes and conventions are used together in a study of genre; we can not just speak about codes used such as the text in the newspaper without saying how it is conventionally used.
Newspapers Codes and Conventions:
Photographs: this is there to grab attention. It may or may not be linked to the main story but more than often it is in colour.
Caption: the words below a photograph which give it a meaning.
Banner Headline: main statement which spans the full length of the page.
Byline: name of the writer who has written the article.
Masthead: the title block this includes the name of the newspaper (at the top of the page).
Pugs: the areas at the top left and top right of the page. They attract the readers eye and are used to show the date, price etc. (different colour strip line with this writing in it.
Strapline: an introductory statement just below the main headline (byline directly under this).
Standfirst: the first paragraph of report. It may be in bold print and/or the first word(s) may be in capital letters.
Splash: the main story on the front page of the newspaper.
Local newspapers generally have all the codes and conventions I’ve listed above, however local newspapers also include features such as:
-Local stories.
- Advertising local cars.
- News from local schools.
- Job section.
- Local companies advertisements.
- Classified Adverts.
- Websites.
- Local shops in the area.
- Property section.

Product Placement:
National newspapers and local newspapers are mainly sold in supermarkets, local shops, petrol stations, through the internet, just about everywhere. Generally local newspapers are posted free through people’s doors. Looking at my questionnaire results this is what I have decided to do because people mainly said they would read them if they were free. I will also be selling my local newspaper in shops as well for under 20p.
